Negotiating in an employment situation means reaching an agreement with another party through discussion without damaging the relationship.

It is not just about getting the salary that you want. Negotiating also involves getting the right position with clearly defined duties and expectations, appropriate benefits and prerequisites, and confirmation of the details in the form of an employment agreement or contract.

It is important when you are negotiating a salary that you have in your mind what that perfect number will be.

Usually there are a lot of mind games when you are in the process of negotiating because the employer wants to get you for the lowest price they think you will work for.

Principles of Negotiation

It is easy to fall into the trap of the interviewer asking you what you would like to make. This is probably one of the worst traps you can fall into because it is a lose - lose situation. The company will know exactly what salary you will accept, and you may sell yourself short to get the job. Try to delay this discussion until you are sure the company wants to hire you.

Finally it is always best to be truthful and not lie about your current salary because the new employer can confirm if the numbers are accurate and you do not want to be in a situation were you get caught in a lie.

Build a Good Relationships

Successful job negotiations are conducted on a foundation of trust and from a position of strength - on both sides. It is always good to try to build a good relationship with the new company that you are applying to. Sometimes the job that you are trying to get pays more than your current job, most people try to get a higher paying job, but the interviewer may want to know why your pay is low and it is always good to let them know that you are up to the new salary and that you are worth every dime because of your worth to the new company

Do not begin negotiating salary until you have received a clear job offer. It is much easier to negotiate when you know the company wants to hire you. If you have more than one job offer in the works you can compare the compensation package of both companies and try to negotiate the best deal for the job you want.

Don't be greedy but be confident about your worth to the hiring company. This is much easier if you have the skills, experience and qualifications that the company is looking for. Negotiating a salary will depend on a few important factors such as the level of experience you have for the job you are applying for, also any unique skills that would make you stand out will also be helpful to obtain a new position at the best salary. It is always better to discuss salary with the person who makes the actual decision of how much you will make and perks. Usually a Human Resource person will not be the decision maker for a higher paying salary job.

Once you get to the salary discussion, you know that the company wants to hire you. Negotiate in person whenever possible. Don't feel pressure to accept the terms, take a day to consider your options and make the best decision for your career.
